Fighting Hunger, Fostering Health.

Imagine being a child and going to bed with an empty stomach—not because you’re a picky eater or you skipped dinner—but because there simply wasn’t enough food at home. For many kids in Connecticut, this is their everyday reality. One in six children in Connecticut is food insecure—meaning they lack consistent access to enough food for a healthy life.

Food insecurity doesn’t just mean hunger pangs, it means anxiety and depression, poor academic performance, developmental delays, and long-term health consequences. Because access to nutritious food is fundamental to a child’s growth and well-being, Connecticut Children’s established the Start Childhood Off Right (SCOR) program in 2017. Housed within Connecticut Children’s Office for Community Child Health, SCOR has helped more than 5,000 children struggling with food insecurity by providing vouchers for fresh produce redeemable at local stores and connecting their families to additional food resources.
