A baby born too soon with organs still developing and life-threatening conditions needs the safest, most supportive environment possible to grow and finish their development. Research has shown that babies in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) show an improvement of neurodevelopmental outcomes at higher rates if they are in a private room, where sound and light can be controlled to mimic the quiet, calm environment of the womb. Connecticut Children’s NICU is consistently ranked as one of the best in the country, but it currently operates in an open bay layout where babies are exposed to constant light, sound, and movement. It’s very un-womb-like.

That’s about to change.

When our new clinical tower opens in December, it will include a state-of-the-art NICU with 50 private rooms. These rooms will provide the optimal environment for babies to heal and grow—quiet, soothing, and equipped for even the most complex care at the bedside. Parents will benefit, too. Individual rooms offer the comfort and privacy needed during an incredibly vulnerable time.
